Mother's Email

06 Mar 2014

Dear Congressmen:  Mother's here still hanging around and I've noticed how women have advanced since my days in the 1800s. But Dear Congressmen, I am indeed sullen to learn, according to the 2013 Global Gender Gap Report which measures gender disparity around the world,

Imperfect Mirror of Mind

13 Jan 2014

Isn't it time to make peace with our image? The Buddha said, “The mind is everything. What you think you become.”  What we see and say about ourselves may not bear any resemblance to how others see us.

Big Slave

26 Nov 2013
Big Slave, was fashioned after "La  Grande Odalisque" by the 19th Century French painter, J. A. Ingres,  which now hangs in the Louvre.  The devaluation of the feminine and sex slavery is unfortunately still very much a part of society,  however,  that is  not what I think about when I go into an art museum.  The name  Ingres gave his nude oil painting sounded pretty fancy to me since I don’t speak French. I was surprised to find out that "Odalisque" means slave or concubine.  When we take a  historical look at art we can better understand the foundations of this cultural tragedy.

Elders Are At It Again

17 Oct 2013

Every day I read about another attack on women's health and reproductive rights which unfortunately reminds me of a famous painting, "Susanna and the Elders". In 1610, a 17 year old Italian girl, Artemisia Gentileschi, painted the bible tale of Susanna, a virtuous young woman sexually stalked and harassed by the elders of her community.

Diversion of Rights

07 Sep 2013

In Botticelli’s 14th century painting, “The Birth of Venus”,  the Goddess is emerging from the sea with the winds blowing her to shore.  But this isn’t the fresh female's fate today.  There are blowhards in suits now blustering her rights away.  Are the pontificating politicians so afraid of the liberated female they must claim control of her body?

There is an American role-reversal going on.  “Women the new breadwinners” said a 2012 USA TODAY analysis of Census Bureau data, while a recent Nielsen study reported that women will control two-thirds of the consumer wealth in the U.S. over the next decade. There are even more women voters now! Wow. The Feminine is emerging as a power to be reckoned with.  But if you’re in doubt, you’re right!
