Big Slave

26 Nov 2013
Big Slave, was fashioned after "La  Grande Odalisque" by the 19th Century French painter, J. A. Ingres,  which now hangs in the Louvre.  The devaluation of the feminine and sex slavery is unfortunately still very much a part of society,  however,  that is  not what I think about when I go into an art museum.  The name  Ingres gave his nude oil painting sounded pretty fancy to me since I don’t speak French. I was surprised to find out that "Odalisque" means slave or concubine.  When we take a  historical look at art we can better understand the foundations of this cultural tragedy.

Elders Are At It Again

17 Oct 2013

Every day I read about another attack on women's health and reproductive rights which unfortunately reminds me of a famous painting, "Susanna and the Elders". In 1610, a 17 year old Italian girl, Artemisia Gentileschi, painted the bible tale of Susanna, a virtuous young woman sexually stalked and harassed by the elders of her community.

Freeda Fem: Light Warrior

28 Jul 2013

Freeda Fem represents all of us crossing that bridge to higher consciousness.  Freeda is tattered by the attacks, the bombardments on women’s rights and limited freedoms. She knows gender supremacy is a no win for everyone.

It's Been No Picnic

19 Jul 2013

Art has played a prominent role in society and influences how we should think. Edouard Manet’s “The Picnic  was the inspiration for me to paint “It’s Been No Picnic”.  In Manet’s 1863 oil painting, the women are undressed, and the men clothed, which now seems the norm. Trained as a psychodramatist, I have learned to find much value in role reversals.
